It's important to be preparing for college long before your senior year!

 

One of the biggest mistakes that students make in planning for college is not starting soon enough. Don't wait until your senior year to take tough classes. Don't wait until your senior year to have good attendance. Don't wait until your senior year to become concerned about your GPA. Don't wait until your senior year to get to know your high school counselor. Don't wait until your senior year to take the ACT or SAT. Don't wait until your senior year to decide to go to college. Don't wait until your senior year to become aware of the resources available in the Career Center.

Freshman Year

  • Concentrate on getting good grades! Colleges look at your freshman grades

  • Establish good study habits, what you do now will affect what you do in the future

  • Maintain good attendance

  • Take challenging courses

  • Explore which extracurriculars you would like to be involved with

  • Talk to people you know about their college and career experience including how they decided what they wanted to do.

Junior Year

  • Keep up your grades! These are the grades colleges will see first when you apply

  • Focus on becoming a leader in a few extracurricular activities. Run for an office, lead a team, or start your own service project

  • Get to know your favorite teachers well. Start thinking about who you might ask to write a letter of recommendation for you

  • Talk to your counselor about your college plans

  • Research colleges that interest you. Narrow your choices to 8-10 schools that have what you are looking for in courses, location, and extracurricular activities

  • Talk to your parents about your college plans

  • Sign up to take the PSAT

  • Complete the FAFSA4caster

  • Take the ACT or SAT at least twice

Sophomore Year

  • Keep up your grades. Colleges look at your sophomore grades.

  • Start to dedicate yourself to a few extracurricular activities, and work toward a leadership position.

  • Compete in contests and competitions to collect some awards and honors.

  • Participate in service projects and activities.

  • Research colleges on the internet that interest you. Be sure to look specifically at admissions requirements.

  • Take the PLAN test for ACT preparation

  • Find a summer job, do volunteer work, or attend BATC's summer program

     

Senior Year

  • Keep up your grades! This is no time to slack off after so much hard work

  • Review graduation status and college plans with your counselor

  • Prepare your senior resume

  • Attend the College Tour held at Sky View for all seniors

  • Sign up to take or retake the ACT or SAT

  • Email or send letters to colleges asking about admissions forms and financial aid information.

  • Write essays for scholarships and admissions

  • Apply to the colleges and/or technical schools of your choice

  • Request an officeial transcript from the counseling office to complete the application process

  • Complete the FAFSA

  • Call admissions offices of schools to verify your application has been recieved

  • Verify that all parts of your scholarship application have been recieved, including letters of recommendation, transcripts, and grades

  • Compare admissions and financial aid information from the colleges you were accepted to. Carefully select the college you will attend next fall

  • Once you have made your decision, write other colleges and decline their acceptance

  • Let your counselor know about your decisions concerning college and scholarship choices

  • Attend the Awards Assembly

  • Graduate!
